Shawn K crouched calmly beside a dog, reading its body language — Singapore in-home dog behaviour training

The short version: DOGPAPA is in-home dog behaviour training in Singapore by Shawn K, a former Singapore Police K-9 Unit handler. Owners who search for a dog behaviourist usually have a reactive, anxious, or barking dog — behaviours that are managed elsewhere with treats and gadgets. Shawn works on the root instead: the dog learns to trust the owner's leadership, so the behaviour settles rather than being suppressed. Sessions run in the dog's actual home environment, use no food rewards, and start at S$250 for a single consultation.

The basics

What dog behaviour training actually is.

A dog that pulls, barks at the lift, lunges at other dogs in the void deck, or panics when left alone is not being naughty — they are deciding for themselves because no one has shown them they do not have to. Behaviour training, the way Shawn teaches it, is about giving the dog a leader they can trust. Once that is in place, the behaviour settles. The barking, the reactivity, the anxiety — most of it was the dog trying to manage a situation they were never meant to manage alone.

This is the difference owners are reaching for when they look for a dog behaviourist in Singapore rather than a trainer. A trainer drills a command on top of the problem. Working on behaviour means going underneath it — reading what the dog is actually communicating, then changing the relationship so the command is no longer fighting against the dog's instinct to take charge.

Behaviour and obedience are two sides of one thing. The leadership and communication that calm a reactive dog are the same ideas behind dog obedience training in Singapore and behind every dog Shawn sees. It is all one method — see dog training in Singapore for the full picture, or, if your dog is still under 12 months, puppy training in Singapore is where the foundation is built before bad habits form.

Why DOGPAPA

Ditch the treat.
Build a dog who listens
because they want to.

Three principles

Behaviour that actually changes.

The DOGPAPA Method is built on three ideas. They are why behaviour worked on this way settles for good instead of resurfacing the moment the treats run out.

01

No treats. Real communication.

Treat-based behaviour works while food is present and fades the moment something more interesting appears — which is exactly when a reactive or anxious dog struggles most. Shawn builds behaviour on trust, so it holds in the corridor, at the void deck, and on the walk where it counts.

02

Train the owner.

A behaviour problem is a relationship. Shawn trains you for four sessions so you become the leader your dog reads every day. By the end, the change stays with you — not with a trainer you have to keep calling back.

03

K9 grounded. Home tested.

The principles that keep a Police narcotic detector dog calm and focused under real pressure are what settle a reactive family dog when another dog walks past. The methods work because they respect how dogs actually think — not because they bribe them.

What we work on

The behaviour problems
Shawn is called for most.

Most behaviour problems in Singapore share one of three roots — the owner has not been shown what to do, the dog has not been given clear leadership, or the gear being used works against the dog. Shawn covers all three in the first session.

Common behaviour issues he works on:

  • Reactivity to other dogs. Lunging, barking, or freezing on the lead. It often looks like aggression but is anxiety — the dog does not yet trust the owner to handle the situation.
  • Anxiety and separation anxiety. Pacing, whining, destruction, or distress when left alone. Worked on by building the dog's confidence in their owner's leadership.
  • Excessive barking. At the door, in the corridor, at every passing sound — a dog announcing and managing their environment because no one else is.
  • Lift and corridor behaviour. Spinning, barking, or lunging in the lift. One of the most common HDB issues — addressed in your actual lift, with your actual dog.
  • Leash pulling. The dog drags the owner down the corridor, around the void deck, through the park. Many owners see meaningful change in the first session.
  • Jumping and poor door manners. Mobbing guests, bolting through doorways, no impulse control at thresholds.
  • Void deck distractions and recall. A dog that tunes the owner out the moment there is something more interesting nearby.

The method does not change per problem. It is the same principles applied consistently — which is why owners who learn it once can keep applying it for the rest of their dog's life. If what your dog does looks more like real aggression or has a bite history, message Shawn with the details and he will tell you honestly whether it is something he can help with.

The programme

Four sessions.
A calmer dog.

Behaviour change follows the same four-session structure for puppies and grown dogs. The principles do not change with age — only the pace. Shawn only moves forward when each session's objectives are achieved.

Session 1

Foundation

Overview and assessment of your dog. Problem-solving for the specific behaviour you booked for. Foundation work for everything that follows.

Session 2

Heel work

Reinforce what is working from session one. Introduce heel work and auto-sits — the bedrock of a calm walk in any environment.

Session 3

Stay & recall

Build sit and down into implied stay positions. Introduce recall — the foundation of off-leash control.

Session 4

Off-leash

Advance to off-leash recall and control. The composure that lets you take your dog anywhere, anytime — calmly, on a slack lead or no lead at all.

The trainer

From Police K9 to your home.

Shawn K is a former handler with the Singapore Police K-9 Unit, where he handled Narcotic Detector Dogs. He trained under his uncle, who taught Singapore Police K9 handlers for 40+ years. Reading a dog's body language and working out what is driving a behaviour is the core of that work.

Police dogs do not work for treats. They work for the relationship. The same principles that keep a working dog calm and focused under pressure are what change behaviour in a family dog — and they are what Shawn teaches in your home.

Common questions

Behaviour training, answered.

What is dog behaviour training?

Dog behaviour training works on the root cause behind a problem behaviour — reactivity, anxiety, barking, pulling, jumping — rather than drilling a command on top of it. A dog that lunges at other dogs or barks in the lift is usually managing a situation themselves because no one has shown them they do not have to. The DOGPAPA Method addresses that by giving the dog a leader they trust, so the behaviour settles instead of being suppressed.

What is the difference between a dog trainer and a dog behaviourist in Singapore?

People usually look for a dog trainer to teach commands — sit, stay, heel — and a dog behaviourist to resolve problem behaviours like reactivity, anxiety, or barking. In practice the two are connected: most behaviour problems are a communication and leadership gap, and most obedience problems share the same root. Shawn K is a former Singapore Police K9 handler who works on both, in your home, using one method built on respect rather than treats.

Can you help with a reactive dog?

Yes. Reactivity is one of the issues Shawn works on most. It often comes from anxiety, which softens as the dog learns to trust the owner's leadership. What looks like aggression is frequently a dog that does not yet believe their owner has the situation handled, so they try to handle it themselves.

Do you work with dog aggression?

Many behaviours that look like aggression — lunging, growling, snapping on the lead — are rooted in anxiety and a lack of clear leadership rather than a dangerous dog. Message Shawn on WhatsApp with your dog's age, breed, and exactly what happens and when, and he will tell you honestly whether it is something he can help with.

Can you help with separation anxiety and excessive barking?

Yes. Separation anxiety, barking, and HDB-specific issues like corridor and lift behaviour are among the most common problems Shawn is called for in Singapore. They are worked on in the environment where they actually happen — your home, corridor, lift, and void deck.

Do you fix behaviour problems without treats?

Yes. The DOGPAPA Method uses no food rewards. Treat-based behaviour works while food is present but tends to fade when it runs out or something more interesting appears — which is exactly the moment a reactive or anxious dog struggles most. Behaviour built on respect and trust holds when it matters.

How much does dog behaviour training cost in Singapore?

A single in-home consultation is S$250 (around 60 minutes), which is enough to assess and start work on one specific behaviour issue. The Baby Puppy Class (4 sessions, dogs under 12 months) is S$720 and the Adult Class (4 sessions, dogs 12 months and older) is S$880. Packages are valid for 6 months from the first session.

How long does it take to fix a behaviour problem?

A single consultation is enough to assess one specific behaviour and start changing it — many owners see meaningful change in the first session. Deeper or longer-standing patterns are built out across the four-session programme, which moves from foundation through reliable off-leash control. Shawn only advances when each stage is reliable.

Do you work with rescue dogs and Singapore Specials?

Yes. The Adult Class is built for dogs 12 months and older, including rescues, Singapore Specials, and dogs that have tried other training and not progressed. Many behaviour issues in rescue dogs come from uncertainty — the principles do not change with the dog's history, only the pace.

How do I book a behaviour consultation?

Send a WhatsApp message to +65 9813 2756. Tell Shawn your dog's age, breed, and the main behaviour you are dealing with. He replies personally — usually the same working day.

Tell me about your dog.

Send a WhatsApp message. I'll ask one or two questions, then tell you honestly what I'd do — single consultation or full four-session programme. No pressure either way.
