Before You Own · Pre-ownership consultation

Right start.
Right dog.

Before You Own is a one-on-one consultation for anyone considering getting a puppy or dog — whether by adoption or purchase. Before a single dollar is spent or a single commitment is made, we make sure the decision to bring a dog home is the right one — and if so, that it's the right dog.

And I'll be honest with you: it may end up that you decide not to get a dog at all, or not yet. That's a good outcome too. Sometimes the right call is to wait.

Why this matters

The most important decision happens before the dog arrives.

Getting a dog is one of the biggest commitments a person or family can make — financially, emotionally, and in terms of time and lifestyle. Most people choose a dog based on looks or impulse, without understanding what that breed truly needs, or without honestly assessing whether they themselves are ready. That's how mismatches happen: dogs surrendered, rehomed, or owners left overwhelmed, frustrated, and heartbroken.

A mismatch rarely stays a small problem — it grows into costly retraining, behavioural work, vet bills, damaged property, and often the heartbreak of rehoming. Most of that is entirely preventable. Before You Own exists to prevent it — an investment made before the dog arrives, so the decision, and the dog, is right from day one.

What the consultation covers

Five things we work through.

01

Readiness assessment

An honest evaluation of your lifestyle, affordability, living situation, time availability, and long-term commitment — to determine whether you are genuinely ready to take on dog ownership.

02

Owner education

A clear walkthrough of the full scope of responsibility involved in raising a dog — training requirements, daily care, health needs, and the realistic costs and time involved.

03

Breed matching

Guidance on which breeds genuinely suit your home, budget, activity level, and family — matching temperament and needs to your real, everyday life rather than appearance or trend.

04

Selecting the right dog

Once a breed is chosen, coaching on how to evaluate individual dogs or puppies within that breed — including a temperament test to assess whether a specific dog is suitable for your household.

05

Pre-arrival preparation

A practical setup guide covering everything needed at home before the dog arrives, so the transition is smooth for both the dog and the family.

Good to know

Honest advice, in plain terms.

Sometimes the answer is "wait"

This consultation is genuinely diagnostic, not a sales pitch. If what I see tells me you're not ready — or the timing is wrong — I'll say so. Deciding not to get a dog yet is a good outcome, not a failed one.

Guidance, not a guarantee

Temperament and genetics are never certainties. What I give you is experienced guidance that stacks the odds heavily in your favour — no one can honestly promise how any individual dog will turn out.

Not a vet

DOGPAPA provides training and ownership guidance, not veterinary advice. For anything medical — health screening, hereditary conditions, nutrition — speak with a vet.

Already have the dog?

Then you want the training programmes instead — from a single in-home consultation to the full puppy or adult packages.

Thinking about it?

Tell me what's on your mind — the breed you're eyeing, your home, your doubts. I'll tell you honestly what I'd do. No sales pitch.
